The Buzz: Quick Workforce Bites
- The District Workforce Office held its first districtwide Workforce Meeting, bringing together workforce deans, directors, faculty, foundation representatives, and workforce support staff. A comprehensive needs assessment was conducted during the meeting, resulting in several actionable recommendations.
- Preparations are underway for Discover Seattle Colleges.
- On September 18th, district office held the second annual Districtwide Technical Advisory Committee Appreciation Event, celebrating industry and community partners while highlighting partnerships at each of the colleges.
- Significant process improvements were made to the Workforce Funding Request Form, streamlining the process for requesting Worker Retraining and Perkins funds and ensuring better tracking and utilization of funds.
- A $200,000 contract renewal with the Seattle Housing Authority continues to connect residents with educational navigation and enrollment services, with 818 students referred since the partnership began.
- In collaboration with the Port of Seattle and Port Jobs, South Seattle College launched an on-ramp course at the airport that introduces underserved and marginalized populations to a career pathway in Ground Support Equipment. To further support this initiative, The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges approved the first publicly offered GSE curriculum in the U.S. The first cohort for interested students begins this spring.
- At North Seattle College, the Workforce Accounting and Business Experiential Learning Fellowship continues to incentivize students pursuing unpaid internships in Accounting and Business programs through stipends.
- Innovation in Early Childhood Education programs at North Seattle College has been bolstered by a grant from the Early Educator Investment Collaborative, enabling the offering of certificates and degrees in multiple languages and focusing on anti-bias education and supported pathways.
- North Seattle College received a $100,000 renewal from Johnson Controls to enhance the Electronics Technology program, building on previous successes with scholarships, lab support, and student services.
- This quarter also marked the launch of a districtwide IT Technical Advisory Committee, which is providing industry expertise to inform curriculum updates.
- At Central, Career Connect endorsements have supported critical updates to culinary and dental equipment.
- Corporate and Customized Training secured over $1.5 million in grants and contracts to support projects across key industries in Washington state.
- Updates to the Start Next Quarter platform have further streamlined workforce funding eligibility for students.

Celebrating Collaboration for Workforce Development: Career Connect Washington featuring King County Jumpstart
On November 22nd, Seattle Central College Wood Technology Center hosted Governor Jay Inslee and state leaders to discuss workforce education, scholarships, and green initiatives. The meeting highlighted partnerships driving economic opportunity in renewable energy and celebrated success stories from workforce programs, showcasing Washington’s leadership in building a sustainable, inclusive economy.
Participants included Governor Inslee; Angie Mason-Smith from Washington STEM; Maud Daudon, former Executive Director of Career Connect Washington; Ingrid Stegmoeller from the Washington Roundtable; Michael Carter from the King County Executive Climate Office; Shannon Braddock, King County Deputy Executive; Roz Jenkins, Senior Economic Inclusion manager at Emerald Cities Collaborative, Kimberly Hetrick from the Washington State Achievement Council; Chantae Racasner, Acting President of Seattle Central College; and Dalia Sherif, Senior Executive Director for Workforce Development.
The discussion highlighted the power of partnerships in driving economic opportunity, particularly in green industries and green trade pathways. Beneficiaries of program funding shared inspiring success stories, showcasing how workforce programs have helped them achieve career goals in renewable energy, sustainable technologies, and other climate-forward fields.
Governor Inslee emphasized the importance of continued investment in workforce education and the critical role of partnerships in achieving the state’s climate and economic goals. He was proud to share that Washington state is leading the way in building a green economy.

A Night to Remember: Equalux Gala Supports Culinary Scholarships
On November 10, 2024, the Seattle Colleges community came together at the Equalux Gala, an evening dedicated to celebrating equity, diversity, and the transformative power of education. Held at Westin Seattle Hotel, the gala brought together supporters, students, and advocates to raise funds for culinary scholarships at Seattle Colleges.
This year, the Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) introduced the Tamara Murphy Food Is Love Scholarship, honoring the late chef's legacy by supporting scholars in culinary arts and food justice. The fund aims to nurture future leaders in the culinary field, reflecting Tamara Murphy's passion and commitment to the community. The Equalux Gala raised nearly $900,000 in scholarships, marking a record-breaking achievement.
The event featured exquisite cuisine, inspiring speeches, and stories from scholarship recipients who shared how these opportunities have impacted their educational journeys. Seattle Colleges’ commitment to equity and access was at the heart of the evening, as attendees joined forces to ensure that aspiring culinary professionals have the resources they need to succeed. The funds raised will directly support scholarships, empowering students to pursue their dreams and contribute to the region's thriving culinary scene.

This change reflects our commitment to aligning resources and expertise to better serve our community and workforce partners. Handshake & Headshots: Empowering Student Careers with Networking and Professional Resources
Building connections and creating opportunities, Handshake & Headshots is transforming the way Seattle Colleges students navigate their career journeys. By combining cutting-edge technology, professional development resources, and engaging events, this initiative empowers students to network, shine online, and take confident steps toward their future.
Launched in 2022 with grant funds from the Office of Economic Development (OED) at the City of Seattle, Handshake & Headshots has become a cornerstone event for Seattle Colleges students. This initiative supports the adoption of Handshake, the college district’s premier job portal, by introducing students to its capabilities and encouraging its use through engaging activities.
To maximize impact, District Workforce collaborated with campus career services departments to design an innovative event series. Combining career resources with free professional headshots, these events offer students a unique opportunity to network with employers, enhance their online presence, and access robust career services in a fun and approachable way.
Part of the First Generation Resource Fair, the event was hosted on November 13th at North Seattle College. More than 50 students, staff and volunteers attended, and 30 free headshots were taken.

Seattle Colleges at the Bright Future Career Fair
Seattle Colleges proudly showcased our commitment to workforce development and education by participating in the Washington State Auto Dealers Association (WASADA) Bright Future Career Fair, held at the Seattle International Auto Show on November 15. This exciting event brought together industry leaders, educators, and aspiring students to explore career pathways in automotive, aviation, and diesel technologies.
Representing Seattle Colleges, Dean Ferdinand Orbino, Dean of Instruction at South Seattle College, and Dr. Dalia Sherif, Senior Executive Director of Workforce Development, enthusiastically engaged with over 600 students throughout the day. Together, they highlighted the innovative programs offered at South Seattle College and across the district, inspiring the next generation of skilled professionals to consider careers in these dynamic and high-demand fields.
Through hands-on materials, passionate conversations, and a focus on future-forward industries, our team made a strong impression on students and demonstrated Seattle Colleges' pivotal role in shaping the workforce of tomorrow.

Seattle Colleges Workforce Team Joins Seattle Public Schools at Limitless Convention
Seattle Colleges joined Seattle Public Schools at the Limitless Convention, November 18-20, to explore transformative practices in higher education. Sponsored by the Gates Foundation, the event focused on the Coherence Model. Together, participants examined ways to bridge gaps, streamline transitions, and build impactful partnerships across education and workforce pathways.
The Workforce Development Team from Seattle Colleges, alongside counterparts from Seattle Public Schools, attended the Limitless Convention held November 18-20 at the Ilani Resort in Ridgefield, Washington. Sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the event focused on transformative practices in higher education aimed at defeating fragmentation and fostering coherent, sustainable progress.
A central theme of the convention was the Coherence Model, a strategic framework designed to align systems, policies, and practices within higher education. By bridging gaps and addressing silos, the Coherence Model promotes collaboration, equity, and streamlined efforts that lead to measurable student success.
Participants explored how this approach could revolutionize pathways from high school to college and into the workforce, ensuring smoother transitions for students and more impactful partnerships with industry. Key sessions included insights on breaking down institutional barriers, embedding equity at the core of decision-making, and designing workforce programs that respond to real-world demands.
Attendees also engaged in dynamic discussions about creating partnerships that reflect the shared goals of K-12 education, higher education, and the workforce. The collaboration between Seattle Colleges and Seattle Public Schools at this event exemplifies the shared commitment to advancing equitable opportunities for all students.
Workforce Education Council Fall 2024 Meeting
The Workforce Education Council (WEC) met on October 16-18, 2024, at Whatcom Community College to explore and develop initiatives to improve access to workforce training, boost local economic development, and expand services for dislocated workers in the state.

WEC is a council of the Instruction Commission (IC) and the Washington Association of Community and Technical Colleges (WACTC). In collaboration with representatives of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, the Centers of Excellence, organized labor, and the Association of Washington Business, WEC explores and develops initiatives to improve access to workforce training, boost local economic development, and expand services for dislocated workers in the state. The most notable highlight was the new Professional Development and Certification Tracking System. The full WEC 24-25 plan is available here.

The meeting was hosted at the Georgetown Campus and explored new initiatives that included creating a Dean’s Council to unify Workforce deans, enhancing centralized support with a district-level program manager, and providing upcoming training on Perkins V, CLNA, and KPI’s.
