What is the RST Academy?

The Ready Set Transfer! Academy is an National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program that provides guest speakers, academic planning and transfer workshops, supports & resources, and scholarships and mentoring to STEM-interested students planning to transfer to a 4-year school and pursue a STEM career.

What is a STEM career, and am I STEM student?

The National Science Foundation defines STEM majors as follows:

  • Biological sciences (except medicine and other clinical fields);
  • Physical sciences (including physics, chemistry, astronomy, and materials science);
  • Mathematical sciences;
  • Computer and information sciences;
  • Geosciences;
  • Engineering;
  • Technology areas associated with the preceding disciplines (for example, biotechnology, chemical technology, engineering technology, information technology, etc.

If you are interested in majoring in any of the above fields AND plan on transferring to a university, then you are a STEM student.

Why should I join the RST Academy?

There are many benefits to joining the academy, including:
  • Participating in a learning community of your peers
  • Frequent, STEM-centered academic and transfer planning workshops
  • Guest speakers from academia and industry
  • Field trips to University labs, and to private and public industry labs
  • S-STEM Scholarships. In addition to providing money for tuition and supplies, benefits of the scholarship include the following:
    • Faculty mentoring
    • Opportunities to complete capstone projects (undergraduate research, service learning, leadership, or design-build)

Who is eligible to join the RST Academy? 

STEM majors pursuing a transfer degree or intending to transfer are eligible to join the academy.

Are their requirements associated with joining the RST Academy?

There are no requirements for RST members. We do encourage members to aim for excellence, to use RST resources, and to improve the academy. We encourage all members to strive to:

  • Achieve and maintain a quarterly GPA of at least 2.8
  • Participate in two RST Academy activities per quarter
  • Participate in assessment surveys and activities to help improve the Academy
  • Inform the RST Academy of changes in contact information
  • Complete an A.S. degree

How do I learn about RST activities and events?

After you submit your RST application, an RST co-coordinator will send an email welcoming you to the Academy and inviting you to join the RST Canvas course. All RST information and resources are posted on the Canvas course, and all events and activities are announced and posted to the RST Canvas Calendar.
