Moving to a greener tomorrow

Curriculum: Agriculture/Landscape

The new Sustainable Agriculture Education (SAgE) Program at Seattle Central aims to address the ecological, environmental, socioeconomic, political and cultural issues related to sustainable food systems within and beyond the Puget Sound bioregion through experiential education, collaborative research, institutional partnerships and professional training. The genesis of the SAgE Program stems from both an understanding of the imperative action that we as a global society must take to steward our natural resources in concert with securing the basic needs of our local populations and the recognition that community colleges play a pivotal role in the advancement of such action. Seattle Central, given its track record for educational leadership and distinct urban location in close proximity to agricultural production, provides a rich learning environment for its students and potential model for other community colleges in cities that face similar challenges associated with the impacts of rapid regional growth.

The Landscape Horticulture program at South Seattle prepares students for the changing future and a variety of careers in the expanding field of Sustainable Landscape Horticulture. Students study plant science, ecological and social systems, sustainability and landscape design and develop the necessary knowledge and skills needed to bring plant life into harmony with human, animal, and physical components of the environment.

The Seattle Community Colleges offer several programs that support green practices in the fields of agriculture and landscaping. The agriculture programs focus on careers in the areas of food and agriculture, including organic farming, urban food technician and food policy studies. The landscaping programs integrate sustainable practices in the curriculum including; water conservation and management, permaculture, low-flow and water-wise irrigation systems, pesticide-free pest management, berms, swales and other sustainable landscape systems.
